Masonry day at Ball State

Nov 03, 2015 (12:12:19)

On September 17, 2015 we had a great turn out on Masonry day at Ball State University.

Thanks to the combined efforts of Local #4, Roger Jones and the Apprenticeship Instructors, and the IKSMC this was a great success. We look forward to doing it again next year.

He passed on September 9, 2015.

News Letter

Nov 03, 2015 (11:48:00)

It is now officially fall, in a couple weeks we will be turning our clocks back an hour and in a couple months we will have completed another trip around the sun and be starting a new year.

The majority of 2015 has been a good year for most of the membership in the Muncie area. Work opportunities have been steady, and guys are staying busy. As we move into fall several jobs are finishing up at the same time, leading to a slight slow down in man-hours. Fortunately there are going to be two refractory jobs take place this year that will need several men to complete.

Looking forward we already have a couple nice projects scheduled and more in the planning stages coming out to bid, making 2016 look like it should get off to a good start.

I would like to thank the Indiana Kentucky Structural Masonry Coalition, Midwest Masonry Council, and the Local 4 Apprenticeship Instructors for the job well done at Ball State University during the Masonry Education Day. With the help of all involved we were able to expose nearly 200 Architectural and Construction Management students to the benefits of masonry construction, while also giving them the opportunity to try their hand at it as well. This was a job well done, and is something that is going to continue to grow every year.

I wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season!

The Muncie Chapter area showed to be very fortunate in 2014. There was a steady flow of job opportunities and man hours through out the year. Many of the members are becoming more familiar with the new International H&W Fund that we are now part of, and we are seeing more members become eligible and remain eligible for longer periods of time. Along with the above mentioned, our defined contribution Pension Fund was able to receive a 9.1% gain in interest.

As we continue to move into 2015, we are off to a slow start due to the usual reasons such as scheduling and weather. There are going to be a couple of refractory jobs this spring that will help generate some jobs while we wait on the weather break. It does appear that by mid March, weather permitting, there will be several jobs getting started. These jobs will consist of The Arc of Indiana Hotel and Parking Garage in Muncie, Ball State will have some new construction and some restoration work, Westminster Village Addition, New IOEU Hall in Chesterfield, New Student Housing for IU East in Richmond, along with the continually evolving and developing Hamilton County.

Congratulations to the new elected Chapter Officers that will be serving a 3 year term:

Chapter Chairman- Patrick Rowles

Recording Secretary- Paul Folkner

Sergeant-at-Arms- Asa Oswalt

Negotiating Committee will be Tom Honn and Mike Anderson

At this present time a lot of attention is being placed on the current legislative body and there activities. There have been 3 bills filed in relation to the Common Construction Wage Law. They are as follows:

Senate Bill 198 is a repeal

House Bill 1019 is a repeal

House Bill 1052 is an amended version.

I encourage all of you to educate yourselves and others about this and contact your Representatives to let them know how you feel.
